What is pigmentation?
An individual’s skin colour is based on genetics and the actual colour of the skin is affected by many things, but the most important is melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin colour and it is produced in the skin by cells called melanocytes through a process called melano genesis. In darker skin the melanocyte is producing more melanin resulting in a darker skin.
You may know pigmentation as freckles, age spots, liver spots, uneven skin tone and scarring. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin colour. In darker skin the melanocyte is producing more melanin resulting in a darker skin.
What causes pigmentation?
An increase or overproduction of melanin is known as hyperpigmentation, which results in uneven pigmentation regardless of a person’s genetic disposition.
Several different conditions or factors can alter the production of melanin in your body, but the main one is exposure to the sun. Age spots, solar lentigo or liver spots are caused by the sun and aging. Some medications such as antibiotics, diuretics, sulphonamides and anti-depressants make your skin sensitive to the sun, increasing your risk of getting sun burn, which contributes to pigmentation. Hormonal changes also play a huge role in the cause of pigmentation because Melanocytes are stimulated by estrogen and progesterone so when hormone levels are unbalanced you have a much higher risk of pigmentation. Melasma, Chloasma or pregnancy mask are all caused by hormones.
Inflammation such as acne or trauma to the skin can also cause hyperpigmentation.
